Dressing Up For A Dream

Description

We have drawing and painting course at school and this week's work was painting/collage that takes inspiration from Velazquez's painting "Las Meninas" (1656). So basically everybody had to paint more than one people and their self doing somethin like drawing/painting to the picture and maybe use mirrors too, like in the original painting.

I of course painted lolitas that are dressing up like the little pricess in the Velazquez's work. The other similarities are the dog (It's my chihuahua Lilli) and the mirror and also I tried to bring some baroque feeling to my work with strong textures and lotsa frillz! And I'm in the mirror...taking a photo. I wanted that the picture of me isn't so clear.

My teacher didn't like this picture, because she tought that the characters have too big heads and eyes (wtf!?) and that I should try something else. In other words: "OMG MANGA! It has to be bad! This is manga! Manga = big eyes!" I think it's a bit insulting, because I try to be nice and tolerant when we talk about some abstract art (which I don't appreciate so much), but she can't look at my picture objectively, because she thinks its manga.

:bulletred: The lolitas, the dog and the red fabric are painted with watercolors and lined with black marker pen.

:bulletred: The pillows have textured with a patterns that I cut out from an iterior magazine. Also the painting in the background and the frame of the mirror are fro that magazine.

:bulletred: I make the picture that's in the mirror by attaching two photos in photoshop together: a picture of me taking a picture and a photo of inside a church in Rome.

:bulletred: And the background is a piece of a wallpaper I found at school

This was interesting work to do! I like to work with the glue and scissors! I'm starting to like collages too! Usually when I paint something this detailed it tooks over a week, but this one took only about 30 hours during four days.

Hay btw! Someone will probably ask how I make my watercolor paintings, so check my Watercolor Tutorial out!

Art is in the eye of the beholder. Some will love the work, others not so much. What matters is if you are pleased with the final piece.
